Working principle of Brushless DC Motor

June 06, 2022

Many people are unfamiliar of how a brushless DC motor works. If they understand the working principles of a brushless dc motor in advance it will make it easier to design it into their product. Therefore Wonsmart, as a professional brushless DC motor manufacturer, will share these working principles with you.

1. The brushless DC motor system is composed of the motor and the driver. The stator windings of the motor are a three-phase symmetrical star connection, which is very similar to the three-phase asynchronous motor. The rotor of the motor has a magnetized permanent magnet, and a position sensor, hall sensor that is installed in the motor to detect the position of the rotor.

2. The driver detects the position of the rotor with the help of the hall sensors. The driver can also use this information to adjust the speed and start and stop the motor.

3. The driver will receive speed instruction and speed feedback signals to control and adjust the speed;

4. The appropriate driver has great control over speed and torque.

5. Many microprocessors have incorporated the functions necessary to control motors into chips that are becoming smaller and smaller. Like analog/digital converter PWM, etc

Brushless DC motors are a good option to the old brush DC motors. The life is far better as there are no carbon brushes to wear out over time. Also, because of the built in feedback, the motor is much easier to control the speed and torque. This BLDC design is also highly efficient so run time on a battery is much longer.
